Math
We are using the Everyday Mathematics curriculum. Unit 1 focuses on building routines and working with the number line. Unit 2 will focus on everyday use of numbers such as telling time, counting coins, and word problems.

Fact Fluency is very important for all students. We practice by using xtramath.org and try to complete the math fact before the timer runs out, if we do it in less than 3 seconds we earn a smiley face!
Literacy
We are using the Lucy Calkins Readers' and Writers' Wokshop models to frame our literacy instruction.
Our first unit in reading is all about building good reading habits. We will learn what to do when we are stuck on a word, how to read with a partner, and how to pick a just right book.
Our first unit in writing is called small moments. We think about one thing that happened (like when Ms. Perkins dropped all the markers) and write as many details as we can about it. We are learning that the writing process is a cycle, we think, we draw, we write, and then we think some more...
We can practice our reading and writing at home using https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login and entering kperkins6 as the teacher user name.
Science
We begin the year learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. Later we will learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin and connect these life cycles with lots of other life cycles.
Social Studies
The beginning of the year is all about communities and what it means to be a member of a community. In November we will learn about the Pilgrim and Indian communities and why we celebrate thanksgiving.
